Students lose points by selecting "order pelvic ultrasound" or "obtain cervical culture and await results" as the next step. The CDC criteria are designed to be sensitive, not confirmatory, and the standard of care is to treat on clinical suspicion alone.

The second major trap is Fitz-Hugh-Curtis syndrome. Test-writers love presenting a young woman with right upper quadrant pain and seeding the answer choices with cholecystitis, hepatitis, or peptic ulcer disease.
